Lonnie Adamson Wins Little Trees 25-mile
SRL Supermodified Race
As usual, Troy Regier started the annual SRL
Supermodified slugfest from the pole and appeared to be headed for the win. But
Lonnie Adamson from Salt Lake City, Utah was the man in the Victory Lane when
the checkered flag finally fell.
Id like to thank the whole team and Davey Hamilton for letting me have
this opportunity, said Adamson after accepting his first Copper World trophy.
I could tell Troy was tight coming out of the turn and so I took advantage of
that. It was tough to pass because of the wind. The wind was really messing up
the cars.
(On getting around Regier) I just got in there pretty hard, and I let the
wind calm me, and the back end just started coming around. It happened earlier
in practice, the right rear just started going away toward the end of the race,
but it loosened up. This was probably the biggest win of my career.
The track felt better. It felt like the first practice session yesterday,
when we were the fastest. The winds were kind of making it difficult when you
were around other cars. You get an aero push behind other cars. It would just
make the car go up the track and its hard to pass that way. Troy was pretty
tight, thats how I got passed him.
Troy Regier was naturally disappointed on being unable to win this third
Copper World race. I couldnt keep the car down, he said. It was real
tight today. We did the best we could. Lonnie did a great job. He was one of the
best drivers out here, congratulations to Lonnie. We were just too tight today.
Coming out of the corners I had to get out of the throttle a little bit to keep
from hitting the wall and he made a run on me. I was in trouble on the restarts
from lap five on.
I guess I wasnt going fast enough for the wind to bother me. Either
that or I was plowing some dirt.
Third place finisher Ken Hamilton drove his son Daveys car to a strong
third place finish, almost catching Regier for second near the end. Troy
started picking up a push midway through the race, said Hamilton. I did
too, but his was a little worse. I was able to catch him, but he had a little
more horsepower on me. I thought maybe another lap or two I couldve gotten
him, but it was strictly because he started pushing and I was pushing less.
The track was really good, the wind was a little bit of a factor out
there, added Hamilton. But I saw Troy started getting a little push,
Lonnie had a little horsepower on him, I was hoping Troys push would get
worse and it did, but then I picked up one and I was just glad to finish third
behind him.
This was really exciting for me driving my sons car and Lonnie in one
my sons cars, and the team really did a very good job in putting these cars
together, said Hamilton. They finished them up on Monday night about 11:30
or midnight, and we came out here not really knowing what we had, and we ended
up having two very, very good cars. Lonnie ended up with a brand new motor with
a little more horsepower, as I can see now, but Im just really happy for
Davey. I wish he could have been out here with us, but we want to thank the
team, our sponsors, for helping us put on the show that we did.
